eleanorjane: Various bottles of blue nail polish with puddles of spilt polish around them (polish)

So since I last posted here I've well and truly succumbed to nail polish addiction, and I went through a phase of buying pretty much every nail polish that crossed my line of sight.

Now I'm managing to restrain myself to the brands that just don't let me down, and it turns out there's three of them: Sally Hansen's CSM range (nothing exciting or cutting edge but a really good core range of colours in the finishes I like), OPI (whose stuff I love, but they're horrifyingly expensive in Aus), and a local indie brand I adore - Pretty Serious Cosmetics, who have excellent service and their polishes are fantastic with a formula the major brands would envy.

(Pretty Serious do have a US stockist you can access from the website, which is handy.)

On Pretty Serious's Facebook page, somebody posted a few pics of how they swatch their polishes for future reference and easy finding, and I was struck by how awesome their method was. So I've embarked upon it myself, and am taking the opportunity to destrash stuff I don't love - I just don't have room to keep everything any more!

Back on topic: here's the swatch/pic organisation method:

It's been, like, a year since anyone posted here, but I was plotting out my options for Black Friday/Cyber Monday shopping (online only--I work in retail and refuse to go out into those crowds when I'm not required + being paid to) and wanted to share this awesome link post, because if any of you are like me, the most exciting holiday sales are beauty sales. The blog Nouveau Cheap always does a great job with a Black Friday Roundup for big stores and large brands, if that's your thing.

But the thing that grabbed my attention was that she linked to this amazing subreddit listing this year's Black Friday sales from a ton of indie brands. While there are still some big brands I like, indies really do it for me these days with the kinds of funky, unique colors and fragrances I crave. And by buying indie, I'm supporting a lot of women-owned small businesses, which is important to me.

Is anyone else planning to treat themselves to some new cosmetics, lotions, and potions this weekend?

But this may be relevant to people's interests.

I just put together a post aimed at people who've not previously thought of perfume as a geekable subject, or known how to get into it:

Perfume: get your geek on

I subscribe to one of those beauty sample services (Birchbox*) and they frequently give me perfume samples. Instead of trying them when the box comes, I end up tossing them in a variety of places. Today I wandered across one and decided to try it out.

Eau d'Hadrien by Annick Goutal has been around for a while (since 1981) and I can see why. It's a unisex citrus/green scent that seems to have "summer" written all over it. The initial blast of lemon doesn't last long, although it lasted about 25 minutes which is pretty good for a citrus. It dries down into a really nice woody/herby scent that's fresh instead of a heavy wood. Even though I prefer buying indie perfumes, I'll be buying some of this because it made me feel happy.

*Which I may review once I get a couple of ipsy bags to compare it with.

So I'd heard about the whole matte texture trend and I wasn't sure about it. Then I saw some swatches of Zoya's Pixie Dust (seriously Zoya? Pixie Dust?) Collection and I decided to try it out. I got Nyx, a pale blue, and I totally love it. It looks like I painted my nails with one of those slightly gray light blue polishes and then sprinkled sugar on it. I have no idea how they make it look both matte and glittery, but they did and it looks fabulous in sunlight. I'm totally getting more of this stuff, particularly since they're bringing out an orange in a month and I wear a lot of orange nail polish during baseball season.

A bunch of Pixie Dust swatches. Some of her non-topcoat pictures make the polish look less matte than it really is; I assume it's the light she's using.

The Yohji Yamamoto perfumes -- including the legendary Yohji Homme -- are being brought back.

Yohji Homme is the one discontinued scent that Sanchez and Turin keep putting in the various editions of their perfume guide, in the hope that one day it will be brought back.

I have an old, half-empty bottle that I have cherished and slowly been using up over many years; it's a gorgeous, smoooooth mix of coffee, rum, liquorice and woods.

Just thought I'd pass this along here as I know I'm not the only a-england fan. I just got an email saying that Holy Grail has been discontinued and is reduced to 5 pounds; also, a-england offer free shipping internationally.

If you want to see what it looks like, it's the glorious gold polish in this review. I went off an ordered it and accidentally ordered three more while I was at it. Oops. Still, I have three a-englands already and love them. Great colours, awesome formula and quality.

Actually, make that four more. I just saw the swatches of Iseult in that post I linked, and I'm going to have to get that too, cos that's gorgeous. Help - somebody stop me before I buy ALL THE POLISHES.

Aww, this place has been so quiet lately! :(

Well, I haven't exactly posted anything either! lol So, here I am again, posting another attempt at nail art.

I've tried several times to do a snakeskin print type design, and I've failed. But this one time, I thought it actually came out pretty damn good. ;) At least good enough to not be embarrassed.

Dark beige base from Mavala, black from IsaDora and gold from H&M. No expensive brands, but I often find that the cheaper polishes comes out better than the expensive ones, for some reason. (And I love that gold from H&M, because it actually has a bit of a sparkle in sunshine!)

I sometimes get curious about random things, so I have a question for the comm:

What's the best product/routine you've found for your skin?

For me, it's been using witch hazel as a toner, and treating blemishes with salicylic acid or sulfur products. I'm more into the cosmetics part of product addiction than I am skincare, so I've never really had a skincare routine. I don't often go buy skin products until it's necessary, but I'll almost always try something new when I need them.

That's how I found that sulfur works for me, by trying e.l.f.'s mineral blemish powder (active ingredient: sulfur 3%) on a whim and finding that it soothed my eruptions, sometimes even making smaller spots disappear overnight. Having had luck with that, I tried their Zit Zapper (active ingredient: salicylic acid 1%), figuring that since it was $1US, it wasn't a big deal if it was a dud. It also makes many of my small spots disappear, though it's a tossup on larger ones; sometimes it diminishes them, sometimes it brings them to a head.

The witch hazel was sort of a roundabout discovery. I had seen it recommended as a toner for ages, but I initially bought it in hopes of it soothing some chronic itching on my legs (which it has helped with, a bit). Once I started using it regularly as a toner, though, I suddenly saw a marked improvement in my skin. I used to have a lot of small, random breakouts, but after a couple of months of witch hazel, those stopped almost entirely. Now I only tend to break out right before my period, or when I can't keep my hands off my face.

My next notion is that when I run out of the commercial cleansers I've been using, I'll give oil cleansing a go.

So what about you all? Any successes, or are you still searching for the right things?

I got my Birchbox the other day and while it was a really good box--I got a Beautyblender sponge and some exfoliant from Dermalogica and a couple other things--it had something I'll never use: Stick on eyeliner strips. As much as I love the idea of eyeliner decals, heavy eyeliner is just not my style.

So, if you want these, be the first person to comment and they're yours! :)

I love it when fandom and perfume collide; it's like peanut butter and chocolate. Mmmmm...

Anyway, along with the rest of the The Avengers hype* there's a line of Avenger inspired cologne.

Not gonna lie, I'd totally wear Infinity Formula and Mischief and maybe Black Widow if it wasn't insanely sweet.

*Seriously, can this movie possibly live up to fannish expectations?

ADDICTION is a great Japanese makeup brand with very high-quality blushes and eyeshadows.

I got a magnetic nail polish for Christmas from a friend, so I just had to try it out!

The polish is by 17 (I think it's available at Boots only?) and the colour is a very nice mauvish dark purple. The magnet on the top is of course detachable, and it's easy to use. I've seen polishes of this kind that demands you hold the magnet over the painted nail for up to 30 seconds, but this one only needs 10. So that was easy.

I liked the subtle "tiger's eye" effect that appeared, and I think it looks great together with the pearly white I chose as a contrast. :)

I've been pining after the Urban Decay Naked palette for a while and so I was pretty happy when I opened my present from my mother and there it was! I also got the Electric set of UD's 24/7 eyeliners and so I was able to put together a nice look with fairly neutral eyeshadow and little pop of color from the appropriately named Junkie (green) eyeliner. Between the hooded eyelids and the glasses, my eyeliner and lashes are about all anyone sees, so that worked out nicely. I chose to go with a very Christmasy and not at all subtle nail polish and let me tell you, China Glaze's Ruby Pumps fits that description nicely. It's SO sparkly and hypnotizing.

All that and some of Demeter's Incense* in the new perfume oil roll-on in my stocking made for a happy product junkie.

How about you all? Any good presents or holiday looks you feel like squeeing about?

*Incense is a fabulous resiny scent that smells just like a stick of unburned incense; it's definitely worth checking out if you like that sort of thing.

Copied from a tutorial I found on YouTube once upon a time (before they wiped out all my favourites in the recent redesign):

I have now wrapped all my nails up like Christmas gifts. LOL Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

If they don't get too damaged before New Year's, I doubt I'll redo them for that. This took soooooo long!

This week I wanted something with a Christmas feel.

My co-worker asked me the other day what my nails look like naked, without anything on, so I included a pic of that too. My camera is beginning to crap out on me, so sometimes the flash is really aggressive and other times doesn't work. I'm sorry for the badness of pic quality.

Base colour is Supreme Red by IsaDora. Some white polish, and then gold glitter and some gold stars. Let me just say that when using loose glitter, you get it everywhere! LOL

My last experiment lasted over two weeks actually! But that was also while I had the flu, so it didn't get a lot of wear and tear. ;)

Yesterday, I wanted to spice up the slightly boring blue I already had. I'm sorry about the glare in the pics, I'm not friends with this camera...

Just a bit of glitter and some rhinestones, but it looks pretty cool I think. :)

OH DEAR GOD I HATE THE NAME OF THIS THING SO MUCH.

I mean, I get that it's presumably acne that you're saying "no! no!" to, but I prefer things in my life to be more about enthusiastic consent, you know?

That aside: okay, it's one of those heat-and-light gadgets for treating acne.

Cons: the name, the price, the fact that it won't do anything for regular blackhead or whiteheads, or prevent spots from occurring in future.

Pro: what it does really, really well is deal with those painful cysts that develop deep under the skin and don't surface for weeks, that you can't even squeeze (but always try to anyway, mangling your skin and ending up with a bloody mess -- or maybe that's just me ...).

Treat them, and pretty reliably, within 24 hours, they're either gone, or they've come to a head and can be safely picked. Sometimes you get a hot or stinging sensation while using it, but it's minor.

So if you can afford the hefty price tag and you get that kind of cystic acne, I'd recommend checking this out. It only does one thing, but it does it very well.

(Mods, could we have a "skincare" tag of some kind plz?)

I had to work today and have no parties to go to, which means no dressing up. Still, I wanted to do a little makeup, at least. That turned into a simple living dead girl look this morning.
